1. (Not a) spring chicken

سنی ازش گذشته

 

Meaning: (No longer) young

Example: She’s no spring chicken, but she’s still very good looking.

با اینکه سنی ازش گذشته، هنوز خیلی خوب مونده.

 

2. All Dressed Up And Nowhere To Go

بیخودی شیک و پیک کردن / بیخودی زحمت کشیدن

 

Meaning: Prepared (with clothing or otherwise) for an event that does not occur

Example: When my presentation was cancelled, I felt all dressed up with nowhere to go.

وقتی ارائه من لغو شد، حس کردم تمام زحماتم بیهوده بوده.

 

3. All Fur Coat And No Knickers

سطحی و بی مایه

 

Meaning: Superficially attractive, physically or otherwise

Example: The candidate was popular during the campaign, but after she became Prime Minister, people realized she was all fur coat and no knickers.

نامزد انتخاباتی در طول دوره کمپین محبوب بود، اما بعد از اینکه نخست وزیر شد، مردم متوجه شدند او فردی سطحی و بی مایه است.

 

4. Beauty Is Only Skin Deep

سیرت آدم باید نیکو باشد، نه صورتش

 

Meaning: External appearance is a superficial basis for judging someone.

Example: Sarah is gorgeous, but watch out—she has a really nasty side. Beauty is only skin deep.

سارا دختر زیباییه، اما حواست باشه ــ اون واقعا باطن بدی داره. سیرت آدم باید نیکو باشه، نه صورتش.

 

5. Clean up nicely

ظاهر تر و تمیز/ مرتب

 

Meaning: Look good when one is dressed up. Usually said of women.

Example: Emily usually just wears jeans and a T-shirt, but she cleans up nicely.

امیلی معمولا فقط شلوار جین و تیشرت میپوشه، اما همیشه سر و وضع مرتبی داره.

 

6. Dead ringer

کپی کسی بودن به لحظا قیافه و ظاهر / سیبی که از وسط نصف کردن / مو نزدن

 

Meaning: Very similar in appearance

Example: She’s a dead ringer for her older sister.

او و خواهر بزرگترش مثل سیبی هستن که از وسط دو نیم شده.

 

7. Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover

کتاب رو از روی جلدش قضاوت نکن/ از ظاهر کسی اونو قضاوت نکن

 

Meaning: Don’t be deceived by looks; don’t rely on looks when judging someone or something.

Example: Don’t judge a book by its cover — she’s beautiful, but she can be very deceptive.

به ظاهرش نگاه نکن ــ او زیباست، اما میتونه خیلی فریبنده و گول زننده باشه.

 

8. Knockout

فوق‌العاده جذاب و زیبا/ پسر کش

 

Meaning: An extremely beautiful woman

Example: When Samantha was in her teens she looked ordinary, but in her early 20s she turned into a real knockout!

سامانتا وقتی نوجوان بود، ظاهر خیلی معمولی داشت. اما در اوایل 20 سالگی، به یه خانم واقعا زیبا و پسر کش تبدیل شد.

 

9. Put one’s face on

آرایش کردن

 

Meaning: Apply cosmetics

Example: Let me just put my face on, and I’ll meet you at the restaurant in 15 minutes.

بگذار آرایش کنم، 15 دقیقه دیگه توی رستوران میبینمت.
