Once upon a time, in a small village far away, lived Vincent. Vincent was an honest man and a skilled painter. He painted walls, boats, and houses and did his work with honesty and diligence.

روزی روزگاری در دوردست‌ها و در دهکده‌ای کوچک، مردی به نام وینسنت زندگی می‌کرد. وینسنت مردی درستکار و نقاشی ماهر بود. او دیوارها، قایق‌ها و خانه‌ها را رنگ می‌کرد و کارش را با صداقت و پشتکار انجام می‌داد.

“Vincent! I have a fence to be painted. It has to be done soon, or it will rust!”

وینسنت! یک پرچین دارم که باید رنگ شود. خیلی زود باید انجام شود وگرنه زنگ می‌زند!

“All right. I will start right away.”

باشه. الان شروع می‌کنم.

“But… but there is a problem. I cannot pay you more than two pieces of copper. I understand it is too little, but this is all I have! If the fence gets rusted, then it would cost me more!”

اما… اما یک مشکلی هست. نمی‌توانم بیشتر از دو سکه مسی به تو بدهم. می‌دانم کم است، اما همین مقدار پولی است که دارم! اگر پرچین زنگ بزند، برایم هزینه بیشتری خواهد داشت!

“I understand your trouble, madam. And to paint is my duty. One must never say no to work!”

مشکل شما را درک می‌کنم خانوم، و نقاشی کردن وظیفه من است. هیچ‌کس نباید به کار نه بگوید!

Vincent was a very poor man. There were nights when he would go to bed hungry! No matter what, he never asked for more from his customers. He would work hard all day and be satisfied with whatever he earned.

وینسنت آدم فقیری بود. بعضی شب‌ها گرسنه به رختخواب می‌رفت، اما هیچ‌وقت از مشتریانش پول بیشتری نمی‌خواست. او تمام روز سخت کار می‌کرد و به هرچه به دست می‌آورد، راضی بود.

One fine day, a rich businessman came for a visit. He and his family had planned a short stay in the village in the most expensive cart, and many more carts followed him. They were full of fruits and goods. The villagers stood in awe as the entire procession passed right in front of them.

روزی روزگاری، یک تاجر ثروتمند برای بازدید به دهکده آمد. او و خانواده‌اش قصد داشتند مدت کوتاهی در دهکده بمانند. او یکی از گران‌ترین ارابه‌ها را داشت و ارابه‌های زیادی هم پشت سرش بودند که پر از میوه و کالا بودند. روستاییان با دیدن این کاروان، شگفت‌زده شدند.

The following day, the businessman called for Vincent. As Vincent walked to the businessman’s house, he met his friend, Tom.

روز بعد، تاجر وینسنت را فرا خواند. وقتی وینسنت به خانه تاجر می‌رفت، دوستش تام را دید.

“Hey, Vincent! Where are you going?”

سلام، وینسنت! کجا می‌روی؟

“Hello, Tom. I’m going to the businessman’s house. He has some work for me.”

سلام تام. می‌روم خانه تاجر. کار دارد برایم.

“Is it? Listen, he is a very wealthy man. This is a good opportunity. You must charge him more than what you usually charge others. It’s only fair! And I am sure he won’t mind paying you.”

واقعاً؟ گوش کن، او مردی بسیار ثروتمند است. این فرصت خوبی است. باید از او بیشتر از مشتریان دیگر پول بگیری. این عادلانه است! و مطمئنم برایش مهم نیست.

“No, Tom. It’s not fair. I can’t charge him more than what I charge others! That’s cheating! If he likes my work, then he can decide to pay me more. But I have to be honest and tell him the right price.”

نه، تام. این درست نیست. نمی‌توانم بیشتر از چیزی که از دیگران می‌گیرم از او بگیرم! این یعنی فریبکاری! اگر از کارم خوشش بیاید، خودش می‌تواند بیشتر بدهد. اما من باید صادق باشم و قیمت واقعی را به او بگویم.

“I am your friend, Vincent, and I respect your honesty. But honesty alone cannot feed you. You work so hard, but people in this village will never have enough money to pay you. Take my advice: you should ask for at least five pieces of gold for the work he has for you.”

وینسنت، من دوستت هستم و به صداقتت احترام می‌گذارم. اما صداقت به تنهایی نان و آب نمی‌شود. تو سخت کار می‌کنی، اما مردم این روستا هیچ‌وقت پول کافی برای پرداخت ندارند. نصیحت من را گوش کن: برای کاری که او به تو داده، حداقل پنج سکه طلا بخواه.

“Five pieces of gold? No! I have never charged five pieces of gold from anyone! I understand your concern, my friend, and thank you for caring about me. But I have been doing just fine with whatever I earn.”

پنج سکه طلا؟ نه! من هیچ‌وقت از کسی پنج سکه طلا نگرفته‌ام! رفیق، نگرانی‌ات را درک می‌کنم و از بابت توجهت ممنونم. اما با درآمدی که دارم راضی بوده‌ام.

“Well… I did my part, it’s up to you now.”

خوب… من وظیفه‌ام را انجام دادم، بقیه‌اش به خودت مربوط است.

Vincent waved goodbye to his friend and walked ahead. He understood that Tom only wanted the best for him. As Vincent entered the gate of the businessman’s house, he was mesmerized. It was nothing less than a palace!

وینسنت به دوستش خداحافظی کرد و جلو رفت. او می‌دانست تام فقط بهترین‌ها را برای او می‌خواهد. وقتی وارد دروازه خانه تاجر شد، محو دیدنش شد. چیزی کمتر از یک کاخ نبود!

“Oh, hello! You must be Vincent — the painter!”

اوه سلام! تو باید وینسنت باشی — همان نقاش!

“Yes, I am sir. You had some work for me?”

بله، من هستم آقا. شما کاری برای من داشتید؟

“Oh, yes. The caretaker for my boat has gone out. He will be back only by tomorrow afternoon. But I need to get the boat painted. Will you be able to paint it by tonight?”

آه بله. نگهبان قایق من رفته بیرون و تا فردا بعدازظهر برنمی‌گردد. اما باید قایق را رنگ کنم. آیا می‌توانی تا امشب رنگش کنی؟

“Yes, I can. Where is the boat? I will get started right away.”

بله می‌توانم. قایق کجاست؟ فوراً شروع می‌کنم.

“Oh, but you never told me how much it will cost me.”

اوه، اما هنوز نگفتی هزینه‌اش چقدر می‌شود.

“I charge four pieces of copper to paint a boat. I cannot charge you less than that.”

من چهار سکه مسی برای رنگ کردن قایق می‌گیرم. کمتر از این نمی‌توانم انجام دهم.

“Four pieces of copper? That’s it? Well, I would never pay you less than what you charge. You can have your four pieces of copper right away. The boat is near the river, call me when it’s done.”

چهار سکه مسی؟ همین؟ عالی، مطمئن باش کمتر از مبلغت بهت نمی‌دهم. فوراً چهار سکه‌ات را بگیر. قایق کنار رودخانه است، وقتی تمام شد خبرم کن.

Vincent took the money. He went to the market and bought paint. And without wasting another minute, he walked towards the river. As he was about to begin, he saw that the boat had a big hole right in the center.

وینسنت پول را گرفت، به بازار رفت و رنگ خرید. بدون اتلاف وقت به سمت رودخانه رفت. وقتی می‌خواست شروع کند، دید که قایق یک سوراخ بزرگ درست در وسط دارد.

“Oh! This can be dangerous! I should fill this up first.” Vincent filled up the hole and began to paint. He worked for hours without food. Finally, the boat was painted. He left and called the businessman to see the boat.

اوه! این خطرناک است! اول باید این را پر کنم. وینسنت سوراخ را پر کرد و شروع به رنگ‌آمیزی کرد. ساعت‌ها بدون غذا کار کرد. سرانجام، قایق رنگ شد. رفت و تاجر را صدا کرد تا ببیند.

“Oh! This is wonderful! You work well, Vincent. Here, take these four pieces of silver. You deserve it. If I have anything else to paint, I will call you at once!”

اوه! عالی شد! کارت عالی بود وینسنت. این چهار سکه نقره را بگیر. لیاقتش را داری. اگر چیز دیگری برای رنگ کردن داشتم، فوراً خبرت می‌کنم!

The next morning, the businessman’s family went for a ride in the boat. The businessman waved goodbye to them at the river and went back home. As he reached home, he saw the boat’s caretaker walking towards him.

صبح روز بعد، خانواده تاجر برای قایق‌سواری رفتند. تاجر کنار رودخانه برای آن‌ها دست تکان داد و خداحافظی کرد و سپس به خانه برگشت. وقتی به خانه رسید، دید که مراقب قایق به سمت او می‌آید.

“Sir, you are here a week early!”

«آقا، شما یک هفته زودتر برگشته‌اید!»

“Oh yes, my family insisted on coming to see the village. They just left for their first trip in the boat.”

«بله، خانواده‌ام اصرار داشتند که برای دیدن روستا بیایند. آن‌ها همین الان برای اولین گردش با قایق حرکت کردند.»

“What? No! We have to call them back right now!”

«چی؟ نه! باید همین الان آن‌ها را برگردانیم!»

“Why are you so worried? I called the best rower to take them around the village. Everything is going to be fine.”

«چرا این‌قدر نگران هستید؟ من بهترین پاروزن را آورده‌ام تا آن‌ها را در اطراف روستا بگرداند. همه‌چیز خوب خواهد بود.»

You don’t understand, sir. The boat has a hole right in the center. Your family will drown. I was going to repair it today.

«شما متوجه نیستید، آقا. وسط قایق یک سوراخ وجود دارد. خانواده شما غرق خواهند شد. قرار بود امروز آن را تعمیر کنم.»

“What? No! My wife! My kids!

«چی؟ نه! همسرم! بچه‌هایم!»

The businessman and the caretaker rushed to the river, but the boat was nowhere to be seen. They searched for hours. James! Lily! Madam! Can you hear us? But there was no response. The businessman knelt there and cried.

تاجر و مراقب قایق با عجله به سمت رودخانه رفتند، اما هیچ اثری از قایق دیده نمی‌شد. آن‌ها ساعت‌ها جستجو کردند.
جیمز! لیلی! خانم! صدای ما را می‌شنوید؟ اما هیچ پاسخی دریافت نکردند. تاجر همان‌جا زانو زد و گریه کرد.

What have I done? My family! I should have never left them on that boat. Just as he sat there blaming himself, his wife and children returned in the same boat.

The businessman thought for a while. Then he understood what had happened and immediately sent for Vincent the painter. Vincent came to the businessman’s house. Vincent, take this, my friend.

این پاداش توست. صد سکه طلا.چه پاداشی؟ برای چه؟ این پاداش صداقت و سخت‌کوشی توست. وینسنت، تو جان خانواده مرا نجات دادی. تو سوراخ قایق را پر کردی. این وظیفه تو نبود و حتی بابت آن پول بیشتری هم از من نگرفتی.

But sir, one hundred pieces of gold is too much for filling a tiny hole in a boat. One hundred pieces of gold is nothing compared to the lives that you have saved. Vincent, take it.

اما آقا، صد سکه طلا برای پر کردن یک سوراخ کوچک در قایق خیلی زیاد است.صد سکه طلا در مقایسه با جان‌هایی که نجات داده‌ای هیچ ارزشی ندارد. وینسنت، آن را بگیر.

Vincent could not believe his fate. Till yesterday, he was a painter who could earn just enough to survive, and today he owned gold. From that day on, Vincent never slept on an empty stomach, for he had earned the reward for his honesty.

وینسنت نمی‌توانست سرنوشتش را باور کند. تا همین دیروز او نقاشی بود که فقط به اندازه زنده ماندن درآمد داشت، اما امروز صاحب طلا شده بود. از آن روز به بعد، وینسنت هرگز گرسنه سر بر بالین نگذاشت، زیرا پاداش صداقت خود را به دست آورده بود.
