1. Dutch Uncle

توسری زن / نگوهش گر / خرده گیر

 

Meaning: A highly critical person

Example: Despite the criticism of my friend, who has a tendency to be a Dutch uncle, I went ahead with the plan, and it has been successful.

علیرغم سرزنش های دوستم که در توسری زدن استعداد داره، من برنامه رو اجرایی کردم و نتیجه موفقیت آمیز شده.

 

2. French Leave

جیم شدن

 

Meaning: Absence without permission

Example: Sheila is taking French leave. She’s going to be in trouble when she comes back!

شیلا جیم شد. وقتی برگرده توی دردسر میافته!

 

3. It’s All Greek to Me

نامفهوم / سر در نیاوردن

 

Meaning: It is unintelligible, impossible to understand

Example: The engineers probably understood the presentation, but it was all Greek to me.

شاید مهندسین این ارائه رو متوجه شدند، اما برای من نامفهوم بود.

 

4. Snowball’s Chance in Hell

شانس نداشتن

 

Meaning: No chance at all

Example: Eddie, I have to be honest with you. There is basically a snowball’s chance in hell that I will go out with you.

ادی، باید باهات صادق باشم. اساساً شانسی نداری که باهات بیام بیرون.

 

5. (Going to) Hell in a Hand basket

به سرازیری جهنم میره / بدتر شدن

 

Meaning: Declining rapidly; getting much worse quickly

Example: Since the party I don’t support won the election, this country has been going to hell in a handbasket.

ازونجایی که حزب مخالف، انتخابات رو برد، این کشور تو سرازیری جهنم افتاده.

 

6. Be A Cold Day In Hell

عمراً / وقت گل نی

 

Meaning: (Something that) will never happen

Example: It’ll be a cold day in Hell when I go out with you.

عمراً اگه باهات بیرون بیام.

 

7. Not Have a Prayer

شانس موفقیت نداشتن

 

Meaning: Have no chance of success

Example: My son is entering the tennis tournament, but just between us, he doesn’t have a prayer of winning.

پسرم وارد مسابقات قهرمانی تنیس شد؛ اما بین خودمون باشه، هیچ شانسی برای بردن نداره.

 

8. Sacred Cow

( گاو مقدس) مصون از انتقاد

 

Meaning: An individual or organization that one cannot criticize

Example: Tax exemptions for churches have long been a sacred cow in this country, but some people are beginning to question them.

 در این کشور، انتقاد از معافیت مالیاتی کلیساها برای مدتها ممنوع بود، اما برخی از مردم دارن اونها رو زیر سؤال میبرن.

 

9. (To) Dance with the Devil

با شیطان همنشین شدن / عیاشی

 

Meaning: Knowingly do something immoral

Example: You’re dancing with the devil if you keep going to the casino

اگه همینطور به رفتن به کازینو ادامه بدی، به یک عیاش تبدیل میشی.
